Well, there was no tradition in Poland to celebrate Halloween. A bit odd idea to laugh at the death, all the pumpkins and fancy clothes came to our country within the last years,
and beside the teenagers there mainly postcard and toy sellers engaged into this custom.
The elderly would shake the heads - 'Paris Hilton's Halloween dress ?' - 'Hilarious'.
'All Saints Day' ( Nov 1) is a national holiday, where in the cities the areas around cemeteries are closed for private cars, instead thousands of people use extra trams or buses prepared for holiday.
At that very day it is almost obligatory to visit the cemetary and put the lamp on the grave of family, or friends, or even on unknow tombstone.
And there is the the old custom connected with Nov 2 - Zaduszki.
Zaduszki - gets its origins in old, pagan Slavonic tradition, according to it high moon around beginning of November was the time when the souls of dead could go back on Earth and visit its families ( invisible souls - need to say). The soul of a man lasted only as long as the memory of him lasted among the living. To help the souls to reach peace, the families used to prepare small loaths of bread, one for one soul, and leave it on special places. That pagan tradition has been later incorporated into the Christian religion, as 'All souls day' with fixed date November the Second.
'All Souls Day' still in sober mood, still is the day of visiting the cemeteries, but also the time of meeting living people. One of temporary, but long, tradition is 'Krakowskie Zaduszki Jazzowe'
Jazz Jamboree organised in the Halloween week. This year has been the 54th time of 'KZJ' , and 'Zaduszki Jazzowe' is second oldest that kind of Festival in the World.
